Overview

Buyers expecting the usual AMG-style kick-in-the-pants may be disappointed by the SLC43's performance, but it's still a stylish and fun-to-drive roadster with pedigree. Mercedes-AMG is discontinuing the SLC43 after the 2020 model year and is saying goodbye with an eye-searing exterior hue called Sun Yellow.

Engine, Ride, and Handling

Under the hood is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes a rather tepid 385 horsepower. Gear changes are handled by a nine-speed automatic transmission and all SLC43s are rear-wheel drive. Mercedes-AMG estimates a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.6 seconds, but we think that number is conservative. The SLC43 has unique suspension tuning versus its Benz-branded SLC300 sibling; its ride is far stiffer which benefits handling but results in a rougher ride over potholed stretches of road.

Interior and Technology

The SLC43's cabin is just as tight as the normal SLC-class's but comes with more standard equipment, including nappa leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats, and Mercedes's Airscarf system which blows warm air through a vent under the headrests to keep occupants warm when the top is down. A dated 7.0-inch infotainment system is controlled by a rotary knob on the center console and a ten-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo lets you pump your favorite jams. The SLC43's folding hardtop roof features a panoramic sunroof so you can enjoy the sun even with the top in place.
