Overview
Born from the exceptionally luxurious Mercedes-Benz S-class, the AMG versions further push the limits of performance and opulence. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG S63 and S65 share ultra-powerful engines and ultra-expensive price tags among three distinct body styles: sedan, coupe, and cabriolet. Although many luxury automakers attempt to emulate these ultimate Benzes, few can actually replicate these high-class and high-performance Mercedes.
Engines, Ride, and Handling
AMG—otherwise known as the performance subdivision of Mercedes—fits all of these souped-up S-classes with handcrafted engines. The S63 is powered by a 603-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 while the S65 uses a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 that uncorks 621 ponies and a whopping 738 lb-ft of torque. The latter shuttles all that power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission, and the V-8 feeds the company's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system though a nine-speed automatic. The S65 sedan we tested was extremely quick, but the 2019 Mercedes-AMG S65 Final Edition commemorates the last 12-cylinder S-class. Still, the S63 coupe we tested proves that the smaller engine is no slouch. Both it and the S63 cabriolet we tested also demonstrated a leisurely ride quality that was only disturbed by harsh bumps that were broadcast by the large wheels and low-profile tires of the cars.
Interior and Technology
One of the most impressive aspects of the S63 and S65 is their spectacular interiors. Outfitted with premium materials and extravagant features, every cabin promises an affluent experience. While the coupe and convertible lack the limousine-like back seat of the sedan, they coddle front-seat passengers with comprehensive comfort and massage functions. The dazzling dashboard boasts two 12.3-inch digital displays that support a fully loaded infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Mercedes supplies the entire lineup with a slew of cutting-edge driver-assistance technology. The list includes a semi-autonomous drive mode that works in conjunction with adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and more.
