Overview

Aggressive aerodynamics and a rude exhaust note are telltale signs that the CLA beside you in traffic has been massaged by AMG.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder capable of 375 horsepower, which Mercedes claims is the world's most powerful production four-cylinder. A seven-speed automatic shifts gears quickly but is clumsy at low speeds; all-wheel drive is standard. We hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds when we tested a CLA45 back in 2013; Mercedes-AMG squeezed an extra 20 horsepower out of the turbocharged four-cylinder starting in 2017 models and it improved its zero-to-60-mph time to 3.8 seconds. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 is a willing partner on twisty roads and is thrilling to drive on a track, but its daily-driver practicality is limited thanks to an overly firm ride that is punishing on all but the smoothest roads.

Interior and Technology

As with the Mercedes-Benz CLA-class on which it's based, the 2019 CLA45's cabin doesn't meet the standards we expect from cars wearing the three-pointed star. Cheap plastic bits, an aging design, and few luxuries remind you that you are in a lower-priced model in a lineup of pampering luxury cars. Power front seats with memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, an 8.0-inch infotainment system, and ambient interior lighting are all standard. Leather upholstery, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist all cost extra. Adults will be happy and fit fine in the front seats, but rear-seat riders will find little head- and legroom.
