Overview
Based on the mid-size Mercedes-Benz GLE-class, the GLE43 and GLE63 SUVs and coupes have been tweaked by the company's AMG division for zestier performance. The GLE43 models are powered by a healthy twin-turbo V-6, and the GLE63 has an outrageous twin-turbo V-8. All models have unique suspension tuning and other sporty enhancements designed to appeal to enthusiast drivers who also need some space for people and cargo. That said, these vehicles share an outdated platform and aging interior that distance them from most of the newer products from Mercedes.
What's New for 2018?
Mercedes has made few changes to the current GLE models for 2018 because updates are due for next year. There's more horsepower, and the coupe body style also gets the newly available AMG Performance Studio package, which includes distinct orange and black exterior accents as well as gray and orange interior appliqués.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The GLE43 SUV and coupe are motivated by an enthralling twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. Its 385 horses funnel through a standard nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GLE63 models get an awesome 5.5-liter V-8 that puts out 550 hp in the SUV and 577 hp in the coupe. It comes mated to a seven-speed automatic and an all-wheel-drive system. The V-6 has plenty of power for most drivers, although both GLE43 versions are still slower than more hard-core performance SUVs with higher horsepower. The GLE63, on the other hand, is seriously quick—quick enough to dispatch a Ford Mustang GT with impunity. With an AMG-tuned powertrain and chassis, all these GLE models have commendable dynamics, if a rather stiff ride that can hamper their composure on rougher roads. Their sporty demeanor and brisk acceleration make them a compelling performance choice versus pure-luxury alternatives such as the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Compared with the sleek and streamlined look of many of the more modern interiors from Mercedes, the cabins in the AMG GLE models are saddled with an aging design. But they are well equipped, with features like heated power front seats with memory, dual-zone climate control, and premium materials throughout. Available equipment includes heated and ventilated seats with massage, Nappa leather upholstery, Alcantara headliner, and heated and cooled front cupholders. In SUV form, the GLE models have copious cargo space and plentiful interior storage. The GLE coupes' passenger space isn't compromised too much, although cargo room behind the second row suffers thanks to the dramatically sloped roofline.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Mercedes-Benz COMAND infotainment system is responsive and loaded with standard features. Although the interface is attractive and robust, the control pad and scrolling wheel are awkwardly placed on the center console, requiring some practice for easy use. An 8.0-inch display is standard, as are such items as Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and SiriusXM satellite radio. While we don't have any major gripes, hopefully the next-generation interface will be more streamlined.
