Overview
If you've ever fantasized about what a 469-hp compact luxury car would feel like, Mercedes-AMG has your answer with the 2019 C63. Available as a sedan, coupe, or convertible, the C63 and its more powerful sibling, the 503-hp C63 S, are at the pinnacle of the C-class's performance pyramid. The ride can be harsh, but with a firm right foot applied to the gas, you'll have way too much fun to even care.
Engines, Ride, and Handling
The Mercedes-AMG 2019 C63 and C63 S both use a hand-built twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine. In the C63, it makes 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The C63 S ups the performance ante with 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. Both engines use a nine-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive. AMG estimates a top speed of 180 mph. In our testing, the C63 S went from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and ripped up the quarter-mile in 11.9 seconds at 122 mph; we haven't tested a C63. All C63s come standard with an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential and an AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive dampers. Dynamic engine mounts are included on C63 S variants. Handling is excellent; the C63 S managed to record 1.02 g's on our skidpad and braked from 70 mph to a stop in just 157 feet. The ride, however, is still quite harsh over rough pavement.
Interior and Technology
Black faux-leather/microfiber upholstery is standard on the C63, while the S models have leather seats. Both versions get a choice of wood and aluminum interior accents. We're big fans of the optional AMG Performance seats, which now have a ventilation feature. The standard setup has a 10.3-inch display for infotainment and other controls; a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster is optional. A Burmester surround-sound audio system is standard and incorporates Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth audio streaming, and SiriusXM satellite radio with a six-month trial.
