Overview

As the top dog of the Mercedes-Benz SLC lineup, the Mercedes-AMG SLC43 is defined by the 362-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 fitted into the engine bay. While it might look like a little beach cruiser, this AMG-fettled convertible is rapid and capable of humbling far more testosterone-laden machinery. The driving dynamics lock you into the fun of piloting a small drop-top with far more horsepower than is needed. What could be wrong with that?

What's New for 2018?

Only last year, the SLC-class took over where the outgoing SLK left off. Fresh from such a significant round of mechanical and design changes—including the lamented loss of the naturally aspirated V-8 in the SLK55—the 2018 Mercedes-AMG SLC43 is practically identical to the 2017 model.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Big engine, small car, could pretty much be the end of the story if the SLC43 weren't so much more than its mighty motor. Granted, the 362-hp twin-turbo V-6 is the star attraction, but the nine-speed automatic it’s coupled with deserves at least equal billing. The engineers at AMG made certain that speed is there whenever needed without compromising refinement or drivability. Handling is meaty and highly direct, allowing you to place this Mercedes exactly where you want it at seriously wild velocities. Keep in mind, the ride is firm and much less cossetting than a standard SLC.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The SLC43's two-passenger cabin is nicely appointed and lends the roadster the air of a luxury machine. From the feel of the thick, flat-bottomed steering wheel to the quality of the leather, plastics, and other materials used throughout the cabin, the SLC43 doesn’t skimp on the details. Where it does trail the competition is the overall design and modernity of the interior. Yes, the SLC is a new-era version of the SLK, but the layout is dated and passenger space is cramped. The trunk is fine for a small two-door convertible, though the roughly 10 cubic feet of capacity is nearly halved when the top is down.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The SLC43 comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen that functions nicely, although it’s smaller than what you expect in a car of this class. While Bluetooth, a Harman Kardon stereo, and satellite radio are all standard, you’ll have to pay extra for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
