Overview
For the 2017 model year, the Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG got a name-change, along with a new 362-hp turbocharged V-6 engine. The car is now known as the Mercedes-AMG SLC43, though the body and chassis are carryovers. It's a two-seat compact rear-wheel-drive sports car with a mechanical folding hardtop that turns the coupe into an open convertible in seconds. Being a Mercedes, the SLC is a bit softer than its chief rival, the BMW Z4, though the AMG SLC43 version is tightened up a bit to be more of a serious open sports car.
What's New for 2017?
The biggest news for 2017, in addition to the SLC43 moniker, is the new 362-hp turbocharged V-6 engine. Also, both the standard and AMG SLC models were treated to a facelift, with redesigned nose and rear fascia, including LED daytime running lights and optional LED taillamps. There is a new infotainment screen, a new driver’s information screen, and a new steering wheel. The hardtop now is capable of deploying at speeds up to 25 mph, and the trunk separator, which must be in place to lower or raise the hardtop, now lowers automatically with the full roof.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
For 2017, the old SLK55’s 415-hp 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V-8 is replaced with a 362-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6. A nine-speed automatic remains the only transmission option, and it sends power to the rear wheels. The AMG SLC43 comes with beefier steering knuckles and new control arm guide bearings up front and forged aluminum pieces in the rear, with more negative camber at both ends, for a stiffer ride and less sway in the turns compared with the standard Benz SLC. Mercedes-AMG says the new turbo V-6 is just 0.1-second slower from zero to 60 mph versus the old SLK’s V-8, which by our estimate means it should make that sprint in a considerably quick 4.2 seconds. Partial credit goes to the Mercedes nine-speed automatic, which has been tuned for quicker shifts in the AMG model.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The SLC43’s snug two-seat cabin features exquisite materials, as well as fit and finish typical of a Mercedes, while the AMG treatment increases the use of standard premium leather and faux-suede upholstery and interior touch-points. Standard features include power heated seats, memory settings for the seats and steering wheel, and keyless entry. The folding hardtop does compromise trunk space, because a separator must be put into place to keep the top and cargo contents apart, though a new feature of the 2017 SLC43 is that the separator is lowered automatically along with the top.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The SLC43 features a new 7.0-inch display screen, controlled by the Mercedes COMAND system, which uses a touchpad and mouse-like controller between the seats. Although the interface works as intended, it's a bit out of date compared to the latest touchscreens found in some rivals. Standard features include navigation, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, two USB ports, and an 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with satellite radio.
