Overview

Based on the the Mercedes-Benz CLS-class, the 2019 CLS53 has been honed by the brand's AMG subdivision for higher levels of performance. The four-door coupe—as Mercedes classifies it—borrows a chassis and interior trimmings from the E-class but has been reskinned with its own unique sheetmetal. Its shark-like nose promotes the company's current design direction but diminishes the more expressive statement made by the previous-generation car. Likewise, its sloping roofline trades spacious back-seat headroom for distinctive styling.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

While the regular CLS-class has a less powerful six-cylinder engine that pairs with a 48-volt hybrid system, the AMG variant adds more power to that already spectacular powerplant. Thanks in part to an exclusive electric supercharger, its turbocharged straight-six makes 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive manage that power and deliver it to the pavement. While we have yet to test a CLS53 at the track, we got behind the wheel during a first drive. Its communicative steering and surefooted handling were slightly edgier than the 10Best-winning AMG E53 coupe and sedan. Still, the sleeker CLS didn't disrupt that car's everyday road manners and provided a thrilling balance of sportiness and classiness.

Interior and Technology

However, the quiet cabin of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG CLS53 is expertly crafted and covered with high-quality hides. Inside, the dashboard is highlighted by a high-tech aesthetic that includes large digital displays and customizable ambient lighting. Its desirable features include massaging front seats, and the infotainment system boasts standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The advanced technology also extends to its lengthy list of available driver-assistance features, such as automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.
