Overview

For a perfect pairing of power and practicality, see Mercedes-AMG's performance wagons, er, crossovers, the 2019 GLC43 and 2019 GLC63. What Mercedes-AMG has created is a pair of unnaturally sporty compact luxury SUVs with a near ideal blend of comfort, athleticism, and utility that are as at home attacking apexes as they are traversing interstates. A facelifted Mercedes-AMG GLC-Class goes on sale for 2020.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

Induce heart palpitations with the GLC43's 362-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 or the GLC63's 469-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8; both hook up to a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. At our test track, the GLC43 delivered a quick 4.5-second zero-to-60-mph time while the GLC63 ripped to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The engines sound great, too, both when driven sedately and when pushed to their limits. Dialing in even more drama, the Sport and Sport+ drive modes allow for cheeky crackles and pops from the exhaust during aggressive driving. An available air suspension with adjustable damping and beefy brakes further bolster their street cred. A set of fastback models—dubbed GLC43 coupe and GLC63 coupe— also are offered, but we review them separately.

Interior and Technology

The high-quality interior from the standard Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class gets sportified in the AMG-branded models, with highly bolstered seats, paddle shifters, and optional interior embellishments such as carbon-fiber trim and red seatbelts. Passenger accommodations front and rear are average for the segment, but rear-seat legroom is measurably roomier than the Porsche Macan Turbo. A tabletlike 7.0-inch display screen floats above the dashboard's central air vents in the GLC43 and GLC43 coupe and is controlled by a console-mounted rotary knob. An upgraded 8.4-inch screen is optional and comes with navigation and real-time traffic and weather updates through SiriusXM Travel Link. Automated emergency braking and forward-collision warning are standard but additional driver-assistance features cost extra.
