2017 Toyota Sequoia
- Excellent reputation for reliability, massive interior, standard V-8 provides plenty of get-up-and-go.
- Outdated cabin design, tiny infotainment screen, guzzles fuel.
- The Toyota Sequoia will get the job done, but the competition is simply better in just about every way.

Overview
The 2017 Toyota Sequoia competes directly with large, three-row SUVs such as the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Nissan Armada. While the Sequoia boasts a strong V-8 engine and acres of cabin space, it’s an open secret that the competition has raised the bar considerably since this generation of Toyota’s SUV first arrived back in 2008. While it has received minor updates since that time, the Sequoia now has more rings than its leafy namesake.
What's New for 2017?
Change doesn’t come quickly to the Sequoia, so don’t expect anything radically different. The 2017 model year ushers in no notable updates or improvements to Toyota’s full-size SUV.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Getting the Sequoia down the road is a healthy 5.7-liter V-8 that churns out 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and there’s a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. This powertrain provides the Sequoia with a good dose of speed, though the lazy handling means you’ll want to take it easy in corners. As you’d expect, there’s loads of body lean, and the result will more likely be seasick passengers than driving thrills. It’s also not polite to mention the Sequoia’s fuel mileage; it's dreadful, even for such a large SUV.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
There’s no arguing the Sequoia spoils you for space. Even the third row is usable by adults, which isn’t always the case, even in large SUVs. You also don’t have to worry about leaving passengers behind when hauling lots of cargo. With the rearmost seats occupied, there is still 18.9 cubic feet of trunk volume to work with. And with the second and third row folded, the Sequoia has a sofa-swallowing 120.1 cubic feet of space. If you want a no-nonsense and hard-wearing interior, the Sequoia will suit you just fine. The plastics found on the dash, center console, and doors are all screwed together nicely, though they don’t have anywhere near the polish and refinement found in this Toyota’s rivals.
Infotainment and Connectivity
A tiny 6.1-inch infotainment touchscreen looks a little ridiculous perched amidst the expansive dashboard of the Sequoia. It’s a fairly easy system to operate, although like the rest of this SUV, it feels years behind the competition. There's Bluetooth, USB ports, satellite radio, and an available 14-speaker JBL audio system, but don’t look for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or an onboard Wi-Fi hot spot. They’re not available, even as options.
