Overview
Toyota is launching a new halo sports car called GR GT, and it sits above the GR86 and GR Corolla—way above—in the brand's Gazoo Racing lineup of high-performance vehicles. The GR GT is powered by a new hybrid powertrain that pairs a twin-turbocharged V-8 with an electric motor for a combined 641 horsepower.
The GR GT has the look of a serious sports car, with a long hood, a small greenhouse, and a giant rear wing. The two-seat cabin appears to be dressed in premium materials and features Recaro buckets and a leather-wrapped dashboard. Toyota says the GR GT's curb weight has been slimmed down as much as possible by using aluminum construction and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body panels. It may be upscale inside, but with a rear wing like that, it looks to us like the GR GT will be a track-attack animal.
Expert Tip: Buyers seeking a sleek, two-seat rocket but who prefer it with electric power may find the Lexus LFA worth considering. It shares some underpinnings with the GR GT, but it looks entirely different.
What's New for 2027?
The GR GT will be a new halo model for Toyota when it eventually reaches production. We expect to see it no sooner than the 2027 model year.

Even though the GR GT is a Toyota, we still expect to see a price deep in the six-figure range when it goes on sale. When we learn more about the GR GT's price and trim levels, we'll update this story with those details.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
- Hybrid Powertrain: twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and one electric motor, 641 hp combined
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: rear-wheel drive
Under the GR GT's long hood is a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine. The V-8 is augmented by a single electric motor, housed in the eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is 641 horsepower. All GR GT models are front engine/rear-wheel drive.
Toyota says the suspension has been tuned for comfortable daily driving as well as track use. The front and rear double-wishbone suspension uses lightweight forged aluminum arms. Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, as are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires developed specifically for the GR GT. Those brakes and tires indicate that Toyota expects the GR GT to be a formidable track-day ride.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: The GR GT features room for two in a handsomely designed but snug cabin. A pair of Recaro bucket seats is standard, and the chairs feature aggressive bolstering to put a strong grip on you during spirited driving—but they also look comfortable enough for a road trip. A large infotainment display sits at the center of the dashboard, and the center console features a toggle-type shifter for the standard automatic transmission.
Cargo Capacity: Toyota hasn't revealed a cargo capacity for the GR GT yet, but we can't imagine there's a particularly large trunk on this thing. When we get a chance, we’ll see how many carry-on suitcases fit back there.
