Overview

The 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser is a worldwide legend, known from Aruba to Zimbabwe as one of the most competent SUVs ever made. It's loved for both its go-anywhere persona as well as its durability; you're not just getting an SUV with the Land Cruiser, you're getting a future family heirloom.

Engine, Ride, and Handling

The Land Cruiser—and its corporate cousin, the Lexus LX—features a sturdy body-on-frame design; its 5.7-liter V-8 engine with an eight-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive offer serious off-roading ability. With 381 horsepower on tap, the Land Cruiser delivered a quick-for-its-size 6.7-second zero-to-60-mph time at our test track. Handling is anything but agile and the steering, while direct, feels very heavy. The Land Cruiser competes with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade, the Lincoln Navigator, and the more expensive Land Rover Range Rover, all of which offer similar performance and handling.

Interior and Technology

Unlike other premium SUVs, Toyota offers almost everything as standard on the Land Cruiser, including a 9.0-inch infotainment system with navigation, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, LED exterior lighting, a 360-degree exterior camera system, a refrigerated compartment inside the center console, a sunroof, and a suite of driver-assistance features that includes automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Creature comforts are addressed, too, with three rows of leather seating for eight, heated and ventilated front seats, four-zone automatic climate control, and adaptive cruise control. Other than a few accessories, the only other major option is a rear-seat entertainment system that includes two 11.6-inch displays.
