Overview

The 2019 Toyota Yaris is a nicely packaged subcompact sedan or hatchback, a strong value proposition, and a playful option in a staid segment. Don't let the badge fool you: the Yaris (formerly known as the Yaris iA) is actually a Mazda 2 in disguise and handles the corners with the aplomb. When the all-new Yaris hatchback arrives later this year, it will share all the mechanicals with the sedan version except for the otherwise standard manual transmission. The hatchback will be shorter than the sedan but provide more cargo space and similar standard features.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

Its 1.5-liter four-cylinder makes 106 horsepower and is paired to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. We tested one back when it was called the Scion iA (before the Scion brand itself was phased out) and our automatic-equipped test vehicle required 9.1 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill. With the six-speed manual, the Yaris was slightly quicker and did the deed in 8.7 seconds.

These aren't exactly thrilling results, but the Yaris doesn't feel slow in the real world. The suspension is well tuned and encourages spirited driving and the automatic transmission's sport mode seems to know exactly when to downshift when the driver is pushing hard through a twisty section of road. Despite its eager nature, the suspension doesn't punish occupants over rough road; instead it damps out most bumps easily and delivers a well-balanced ride.

Interior and Technology

The cabin is about as spacious as its subcompact rivals; that is to say that the front-seat occupants will find little to complain about but adults forced to ride in the back may feel pinched. The driving position is good and controls well-placed to accommodate the driver. The 2019 Yaris offers a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, low-speed automated emergency braking, keyless entry, and Bluetooth connectivity.
