Overview

The 2020 Mini Cooper S Clubman reflects what happens when you take Mini's unique British verve and apply it to a subcompact wagon. Its handsome sheetmetal shows off 1960s-era styling that will have you thinking of Twiggy and Beatlemania, and its cabin features premium materials and quirky, fun design elements. Best of all, this little Mini is a blast to drive, and it's available with all-wheel drive (known in Mini marketing speak as All4) for better traction on slippery roads. The Cooper S Clubman isn't as accessibly priced as the hatchbacks and wagons with which it competes; it's one of the costliest entries in its segment. However, if you're willing to pay up, you'll be treated to a car that boasts entertaining driving dynamics and singular style.

What's New for 2020?

For the 2020 model year, Mini has slimmed the Cooper Clubman's trim range and engine lineup. The car benefits from exterior styling updates, and the list of standard features expands to include amenities such as LED taillights. Within the cabin, the 2020 Mini Cooper S Clubman gets a fresh range of leather trims and interior surfaces. Also, a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is now standard.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The Cooper S Clubman base trim comes with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is part of the package with the Cooper S Clubman All4. Unless you need the All4's improved grip for traveling in inclement weather, we'd recommend the S Clubman, which comes nicely equipped. The Cooper S Clubman travels on 17-inch wheels fitted with run-flat tires, and it boasts exterior features such as automatic projector-beam LED headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated power-adjustable side mirrors. The cabin is home to luxuries such as heated front seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning and keyless entry and push-button ignition. This Mini also comes standard with valuable driver-assistance features such as forward-collision warning and rear parking sensors.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

All 2020 Mini Cooper S Clubman models are motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant is matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and both front-drive and all-wheel drive are offered. In our tests, a Cooper S Clubman (with the previous eight-speed automatic transmission) went from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds; with optional all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission, the sprint took 7.3 seconds. Those numbers make it quicker than the Fiat 500L, which completed the run in 8.0 seconds. The Cooper S Clubman scores high marks for its athletic handling, but this sometimes comes at the expense of ride comfort. If you're looking for a Mini wagon that offers an even higher level of performance, check out the Cooper Clubman John Cooper Works, which we review separately.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

According to EPA estimates, fuel economy for the 2020 Mini Cooper S Clubman comes in at 26/34 mpg city/highway. This makes this Mini more fuel-efficient than one of its most direct rivals, the Fiat 500L (22/30 mpg). With optional all-wheel drive, mileage for this petite Mini wagon dips to 23/32 mpg. During our time with an S Clubman, we observed mileage of 27 mpg.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Cooper S Clubman provides a cabin with solid build quality and eye-catching design. On the center stack, the display screen is placed in a circular housing that is reminiscent of the car's cheerful round headlights. The cabin looks whimsical and upbeat, and the materials used are top notch. Despite the car's small footprint, there's a decent amount of room available for passengers in both rows. With all seats in place, the Cooper S Clubman provides 12.7 cubic feet of cargo space. This expands to 44.1 cubic feet with the rear seats lowered. That's a lot less room than you'll get with some rivals. For example, the 2020 Fiat 500L delivers 22.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind its back seat and 68 cubic feet behind its front seats.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A six-speaker AM/FM sound system is standard on the Mini Cooper S Clubman, as well as an auxiliary input jack and streaming audio. Also, all models come with Bluetooth connectivity, which means you can make and receive phone calls without taking your hands off the wheel. The list of tech options includes integrated navigation, wireless device charging and an upgraded Harman/Kardon sound system. Apple CarPlay is optional for hassle-free integration of your devices, but Android Auto smartphone integration isn't offered.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Mini Cooper S Clubman hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Mini has equipped this wagon with some valuable driver-assistance features. Unfortunately, though, blind-spot monitoring isn't offered. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning
  • Standard lane-departure warning

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mini's warranty coverage is competitive, and its three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance is generous. Some rival brands, such as Fiat, don't offer any free maintenance at all.

  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles
