Overview

With space for up to seven, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is an electric people-hauler with first-class accommodations and a bevy of slick features. Every rider is surrounded by leather, wood, glass, and—most importantly—space. The Hyperscreen dashboard is sure to impress anyone at first glance, too, though owners may come to find the all-touchscreen interface tiring, as we did.

All-wheel drive is standard, and both available models make good use of their two-motor powertrains.

The lineup-topping 536-hp EQS550 4Matic hits 60 in a brisk 4.0 seconds and travels up to 317 miles on a charge, while the much less expensive EQS400 4Matic boasts a 5.2-second sprint and a 312-mile range. The experience behind the wheel is pleasurable but not thrilling. The SUV's rear-axle steering helps with tight turns and high-speed stability, and the adaptive suspension adequately dampens bumps in the road, but neither makes this heavy EV playful.

Expert Tip: Enthusiasts will likely be happier in the BMW iX or Rivian R1S.

What's New for 2026?

The rear-drive EQS450+ is gone, and last year's 4Matic models—the EQS450 and EQS580—are now the EQS400 and EQS550 despite receiving no discernable powertrain changes.

In other news, Benz improved the SUV's standard-features list. Every model now boasts a NACS adapter (for use at Tesla Supercharger stations) and an upgraded second row with seat heating, a wireless charging pad, fancy pillowed headrests, and rear side airbags.

C/D Expert TipC/D Expert Tip:

If this year's model has no changes, this is your cue to save by looking at cars from previous model years. You can almost always get the features you want for less money by purchasing a one-to-three-year-old model.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We'd suggest the EQS400 4Matic Exclusive, as it ups the SUV's luxury quotient with front-seat massage functions, Benz's Air Balance cabin-fragrance system, active ambient lighting, and a head-up display for a reasonable surcharge.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

  • EV Motors: 355-hp dual motors, 536-hp dual motors
  • Drivetrain: all-wheel drive

The EQS SUV is essentially a re-bodied EQS sedan with an elevated seating position and more interior space. The rear-drive, single-motor model is off the table for 2026, but the all-wheel-drive (4Matic) SUVs live on with new badge numbers. The EQS400 4Matic makes 355 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque from its two motors, while the EQS550 4Matic produces a total of 536 horsepower and 633 pound-feet.

All EQS SUVs come with an adjustable air suspension and a rear-axle-steering system that makes the big people-mover surprisingly easy to maneuver. Handling is capable but not particularly satisfying, and steering feedback is minimal.

Unlike the EQS sedan, the SUV features an Off-Road drive mode that raises the suspension and alters the powertrain's behavior. During a ride-along in a prototype, we experienced this setting on rugged terrain and were impressed with the vehicle's capabilities. The 2026 EQS400 SUV we drove had relaxed and comfortable on-road demeanor, which is okay by us given its luxury mission.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Tests: 5.2 seconds (EQS400 4Matic)

In our testing, the 2026 EQS400 4Matic recorded a 60-mph time of 5.2 seconds. The previous EQS580 4Matic we tested, which is mechanically identical to the current EQS550 4Matic, recorded a 4.0-second blast to 60 mph.

In Comparison: Output ratings in this class vary considerably, which makes comparison tricky. A two-motor Genesis GV60 Performance operating at 483 horsepower gets to 60 in 3.7 seconds, while a 500-hp all-wheel-drive Cadillac Lyriq needs 4.6 seconds to reach that speed.

Towing and Payload Capacity

  • Max Towing: 3500 pounds

The EQS SUV can tow up to 3500 pounds when properly equipped.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

  • C/D Range Tests: 290 miles (2023 EQS450 4Matic and EQS580 4Matic)
  • EPA EV Range: 312-317 miles

The 2026 EQS SUVs wield a 118-kWh battery pack that's good for 312 miles of range in the EQS400 4Matic and 317 miles in the more powerful EQS550 4Matic. Both models support DC fast-charging at a rate of up to 200 kilowatts, which will restore the battery’s charge from 10 to 80 percent in about half an hour. In our testing, we were able to charge from 10 percent to 90 percent in 43 minutes.

On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, the 2023 EQS450 4Matic and the EQS580 4Matic both delivered 290 miles of range. We'll update this page with results for the latest models when we get the chance to test them.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Tests: 78 MPGe (2023 EQS450 4Matic), 83 MPGe (2023 EQS580 4Matic)
  • EPA City Ratings: 80-82 MPGe
  • EPA Highway Rating: 78 MPGe

The EPA rates the 2026 EQS450 4Matic at 80 MPGe city and 78 MPGe highway, while the EQS580 gets 82 and 78 MPGe, respectively. (MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV fuel efficiency.)

On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, 2023 versions of the EQS450 4Matic and EQS580 4Matic—which employ slightly smaller battery packs than the current models—saw 78 MPGe and 83 MPGe. For more information about the EQS SUV's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Inside, the EQS SUV features the type of rich materials and high-tech equipment that define modern-day Mercedes-Benz models. User-adjustable ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, lush leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, Benz's dash-spanning Hyperscreen, and wireless charging are included.

Second Row: Riders in the second row have ample leg- and headroom, not to mention standard seat heating, wireless phone charging, and luxury headrests.

Third Row: A two-seat third row is available and suitable for adults on short trips. The SUV's sloping roofline eats into headroom, though.

Cargo Capacity: The cabin has several storage spaces, including a large bin below the floating center console. Cargo volume varies by seat count, with five-seaters offering 31 cubic feet behind the second row and seven-seaters, 28. With all three rows up, cargo capacity drops to just seven cubic feet.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 17.7-inch touchscreen
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • Audio System: 15-speaker Burmester stereo

For maximum theater, the EQS SUV is equipped with Mercedes's mesmerizing 56-inch Hyperscreen, which spans the dash from door to door. Along with housing the digital gauge cluster, it hosts a 17.7-inch touchscreen that's primarily responsible for infotainment functions, plus a 12.3-inch touchscreen in front of the passenger. There's no doubt that the novelty of the glass-covered dash will entice buyers, but we can't help but bemoan the near-total lack of easy-to-use physical switchgear. Every EQS SUV also comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a Burmester audio system, and wireless device charging.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The EQS SUV has a host of standard driver-assistance technology. Along with ordinary safety equipment, such as adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beam headlamps, the SUV also has a self-parking feature.

  • Standard Safety Features: lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring

For information about the EQS SUV’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes's warranty periods align with those of other luxury automakers, such as Audi and BMW. However, unlike those German competitors, Benz-branded models don't include any complimentary maintenance.

  • Limited Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
  • Battery-Component Warranty: 10 years or 155,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: none
