Overview

Merging a sturdy chassis and typical Lexus luxury, the 2019 GX is a mountain climber in a three-piece suit. Adding to its charm is the fact that it's an old-school body-on-frame SUV with a gas-guzzling V-8 in an era where more carlike crossovers rule.

Engine, Ride, and Handling

The 2019 Lexus GX's 4.6-liter V-8 makes 301 horsepower and is hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission. An all-wheel-drive system with a locking center differential provides the GX its off-road credentials. On the pavement, the GX is comfortable but ponderous on a twisty road and slower than most rivals, requiring 7.0 seconds to reach 60 mph at our test track. Those seeking a more entertaining SUV for tackling twisty roads should first ask themselves "Why?" and then go test-drive the BMW X5 or the Audi Q7. Outward visibility is good, and the GX's high seating position provides the commanding view of the road that SUV buyers want.

Interior and Technology

Inside, plush seats, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power-adjustable steering wheel are standard; adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking are optional on the top Luxury trim. Lexus provides plenty of optional kit to luxe-out the GX's cabin, including a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, leather upholstery, a power-folding third row of seats, and heated and ventilated front seats.
