Overview

The sleek 2019 Lexus ES is not only elegant inside and out, it also provides peaceful, worry-free cruising. All-new for the 2019 model year, the Lexus ES shares its structure with the similarly new Toyota Avalon but offers far more panache.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

Most versions feature a 302-hp 3.5-liter V-6 but a four-cylinder hybrid that makes 215 horsepower is optional. At our test track, the V-6–powered ES350 delivered a respectable 6.1-second zero-to-60-mph run; the ES300h hybrid was noticeably slower at 8.3 seconds, but it feels peppy around town thanks to the immediate shove from the electric motor. No matter which powertrain is chosen, the ES is efficient; over the course of our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test route, the ES350 delivered 39 mpg and the ES300h got an incredible 45 mpg. The F Sport model dials in some fun with sportier handling and looks, but those looking for a sports sedan won't find the ES to be as focused as rivals such as the Cadillac CTS.

Interior and Technology

The interior of the 2019 ES is stunning, and the cabin is whisper quiet when cruising. The cabin is spacious for adult riders in both the front and the back seat; the seats are well-cushioned and comfy enough for long-distance cruising. A host of luxury features are standard, including 10-way adjustable front seats, a sunroof, and a 10-speaker sound system. An 8.0-inch infotainment display is also standard; opt for navigation, and it brings with it a larger 12.3-inch display. Along with onboard Wi-Fi, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa services, an array of driver-assistance features is standard, including automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Top trims come with fancy features such as a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, a panoramic sunroof, semi-aniline leather upholstery, a head-up display, and a power-adjustable steering column.
