Overview

After a two-year absence, Kia re-entered the minivan market with the 2015 Sedona, handsomely designed with a blocky, big-van kind of look. The styling might not have buyers swooning, but it may convince some sport-utility shoppers of a minivan’s superior interior capacity and the convenience of its sliding rear doors. The Sedona also offers all the high safety test scores parents tend to study before choosing a new family vehicle. The 2018 Sedona is offered with one engine and transmission combination and front-wheel-drive only, but there are multiple trim levels and the choice of seating for seven or eight.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Sedona’s 3.3-liter V-6 is rated 278 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque and puts power to the road via a six-speed automatic transmission and the front wheels. It’s a smooth and unobtrusive powertrain, and while no muscle car, it managed a decent 7.4-second 0-60 mph time in Car and Driver testing. That should be good enough to give parents confidence while entering a freeway with all the seats filled with soccer-team members. Hardcore fuel-efficiency watchers should note that EPA estimates vary depending on the trim level, which indicates that added equipment of the top trim levels pushes the Sedona into higher weight categories. The Sedona’s steering is light, and the minivan is very maneuverable, with a surprisingly tight 36.8-foot turning circle.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Sedona’s interior design isn’t quite the standout the exterior is, though it is clean and modern, with thoughtfully designed gauges and simple and intuitive radio and HVAC controls. The top-trim SX-L features two-tone leather seats and gloss-black trim, and its sliding second row is described as “First Class Lounge Seating,” though it’s not removable for maximum cargo space. The third row is removable, though the mechanism is clunky and high effort. The console between the front seats is not removable, as it is in some vans, for easy cleaning and pass-through. The dual glovebox features a cooled lower shelf. Cargo space behind the front seats is 142 cubic feet—good, but well short of the Honda Odyssey’s 170.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Sedona comes with Kia’s UVO suite of infotainment features, including speed alert, curfew alert, driver scoring, iTunes or Google Play apps, Siri, Pandora, iHeart Radio, and Yelp. It has 2.1-amp USB charging ports and 115-volt AC outlets. Higher trims include an upgraded infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
