Overview
Considering it was designed from the tires up to be a hybrid, the Niro Hybrid’s best feature may be that it doesn’t look like one. Yet it pulls double duty as both a small SUV and a Prius hunter. With above-average interior space and city fuel economy of up to 52 mpg, the Niro is a package that deserves consideration. Underpowered across the lineup, the Niro is not without flaws, but with crossover looks, an accessible price, and stellar fuel economy, it’s an exceedingly practical choice.
What's New for 2017?
The Niro is brand new for 2017. The compact utility marks Kia’s first use of the hybrid architecture that it shares with the Hyundai Ioniq line. Initially launching it as a gasoline-electric hybrid, Kia plans to expand the Niro portfolio with plug-in hybrid and EV models.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Speed is not the name of the game for the Niro, but it still manages to be as quick as or quicker than several rivals. However, overall refinement leaves something to be desired, as the Niro does not always shuffle smoothly between electric and gasoline power. A 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor mate to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission in the Niro’s only powertrain. The system makes a total of 139 horsepower and motivates the Niro FE from zero to 60 mph in a class-competitive 8.6 seconds. Front-wheel drive is the only available layout. A reluctant, unrefined powertrain is our biggest complaint about the Niro. Its dynamics otherwise exceed expectations. The Niro easily tackles uneven roads, delivering a controlled, stable ride.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Niro offers more passenger space than many competitors, but most of its interior comforts are optional. The base FE model features a fuss-free cabin, heavy on plastic and cloth. Partial-leather seat trim is standard starting in EX models, and dual-zone automatic climate control is standard across the lineup. The Niro was designed from the outset to be a hybrid, not converted from an existing gas-only vehicle. As a result, its cargo space is not reduced by its battery pack. Unfortunately, the rear seats don’t form a flat load floor when folded, and other vehicles in the class accommodate more cargo.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Niro’s standard 7.0-inch infotainment system is a valuable feature in an affordable vehicle. Our enjoyment was only tempered by its sluggish screen response times. The system is intuitive and simple, and Kia earns significant goodwill by providing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Base model Niros receive few infotainment baubles beyond smartphone connectivity and SiriusXM compatibility. The navigation system, found only in the Touring model, uses GPS data to predict energy demands, and will, for example, stockpile energy in the battery for an upcoming hill climb.
