Overview

The Kia Sedona is an attractive alternative not only to direct rivals, such as the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey, but also to compact and medium-size SUVs that lack the versatility of a minivan. The Sedona has seating for seven or eight people, depending on whether second-row captain seats are ordered, and is motivated by a smooth and strong V-6 engine. While there is no option to add all-wheel drive, the Sedona has a planted feel and is agile when negotiating tight confines. Strong safety ratings are another plus point with this well-rounded Kia minivan.

What's New for 2017?

The 2017 Sedona is now available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a highly popular tech touch for minivan shoppers who like to stay connected. Automatic emergency braking also joins the lineup of available active safety features.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Sedona has a choice of only one powertrain, a 3.3-liter V-6 that sends 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. During testing, we noted that while this Kia minivan is no sports car, acceleration is smooth and never leaves you wanting when getting up to highway speed. Light steering and a tight turning radius make the Sedona easy to position, and smooth suspension settings give this Kia a pleasant demeanor during long road trips. Fuel economy is only mediocre, however, and it varies by trim level. More options added onto the Sedona equals lower mileage figures.

Fuel Economy

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Sedona has three rows of seating, and the cabin design is well thought out and functional. All major controls are within easy reach of the driver, who has a commanding view of the road ahead and good visibility to the sides and rear. Not everything is ideal, however, especially if you plan on hauling lots of bulky cargo. Unlike rival minivans, including the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica, the Sedona’s second-row seats cannot be removed. And while the third row can be jettisoned for extra space, the means to do so is a back-straining, complicated process. While this is a practical people-toting machine at heart, the Sedona is available with niceties such as leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, reclining second-row captain’s chairs, a cooled glovebox, heated steering wheel, and dual-pane sunroof.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A 5.0-inch touchscreen featuring Kia’s user-friendly UVO infotainment interface is standard on the base Sedona. While this is a reasonable setup, we think upgrading to a mid-range trim with the larger 8.0-inch screen is a smart choice. This also brings along Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, not to mention additional USB ports.
