Overview

The inexpensive Kia Rio, available as both a sedan and a hatchback, is one of the most mature and refined subcompacts you can buy, with pleasant road manners and a no-nonsense design inside and out. Equipment levels range from the entry-level, sub-$15,000 LX to the tech-savvy, nearly $20K EX. While it’s neither the sportiest nor the most spacious car in its class, the Rio is well-rounded and sophisticated enough to make it worth consideration for buyers on a budget.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Kia Rio’s 1.6-liter 130-hp four-cylinder engine has one of the highest power ratings in its class, but the optional automatic transmission—although smooth—saps some of its energy. The inline-four also gets loud and buzzy under hard acceleration, spoiling the Rio’s otherwise refined demeanor. The Rio automatic has one of the best zero-to-60-mph times in its class, but it’s not as quick as manual-equipped rivals like the Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent. A nicely sorted suspension gives the Rio a pleasant demeanor on the road, offering a good mix of comfort and agility, along with a substantial feel. It also does a good job of controlling body roll in corners, even if it doesn’t feel overtly sporty.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Not only is the Rio’s cabin comfortable and attractive, it also impresses with a simple and straightforward control layout. There is plenty of hard plastic, but it’s nicely textured, and the overall interior appearance is mature and sophisticated for a subcompact. The LX trim might take things a bit too far back to basics with its crank windows, but the EX version is nicely equipped and offers a Launch Edition package that adds partial leather upholstery. Space in the Kia’s front seats is more than adequate, but rear-seat passengers will find restricted legroom. Both the sedan and hatchback body styles offer a 60/40 split-folding rear seat for extra cargo room on all trim levels but the base LX.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Rio offers an impressive array of technology for its price. Standard features include a 5.0-inch display, four-speaker stereo, SiriusXM satellite radio, an auxiliary jack, and USB and auxiliary inputs. Higher trim levels bring Bluetooth connectivity, and the Kia UVO infotainment system with such features as a 7.0-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Safety Features and Crash Test Ratings

For more information about the Kia Rio’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty
