  • Attractive price point, drives and rides like a more expensive car, nicely designed cabin.
  • LOWS
  • Engine gets loud when you punch the gas pedal, base trim is a little bleak inside, more rear legroom would be nice.
  • VERDICT
  • The Rio sedan and hatchback make a strong case for spending less money on a smart and substantial-feeling subcompact car.

Overview

The Kia Rio has a rock-bottom price but, thankfully, this subcompact doesn’t feel like a team of ruthless accountants built it. While the base model is a little too sparse for our tastes, adding popular extras won’t bust your budget whether you’re considering either the Rio sedan or the hatchback. There’s a reasonable amount of straight-line pep for a subcompact, and the steering is light and accurate. While it doesn’t offer the last word in sporty driving, the Rio’s strong points are numerous.

What's New for 2017?

The only notable change for the 2017 Rio is the discontinuation of the sedan in SX trim. Otherwise, this value-conscious subcompact carries on as before.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Rio has one powertrain, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that sends 138 horsepower to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. This engine provides the Rio with surprising verve when you need a little added acceleration, although it does get noisy under a heavy throttle. Either transmission makes the most of the Rio's available power. Keep in mind, choosing the hatchback means your only gearbox option is the automatic. When it comes to ride and handling, the Rio feels a cut above its modest price point. It’s not the sportiest small car we’ve driven, but the suspension copes well with most road surfaces, and the light steering makes it easy to maneuver.

Fuel Economy

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Like the rest of the Rio, the cabin looks and feels more substantial than you expect from a vehicle this inexpensive. The layout of the dashboard is straightforward, and the materials used throughout the interior don’t scream “I bought a cheap car!” We do think the base trim is a little too meager in terms of amenities, and stepping up to a higher trim doesn’t demand too much additional cash outlay. Available extras include power windows and door locks (standard on all but the base trim), a sunroof, keyless entry, and leather upholstery. We do wish a few inches of added rear legroom was on the option sheet, too. As it is, any tall adults relegated to the second row will be hoping the drive will at least be short.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The entry-level 4.3-inch touchscreen is on the small side, though a more fingertip-friendly 7.0-inch screen is available. Standard tech includes a single USB port, auxiliary input, satellite radio, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and a four-speaker stereo. Available features include Bluetooth connectivity and a six-speaker audio system. No matter which of the two screens you get, Kia’s UVO infotainment system's controls and menus are highly intuitive and quick to respond to commands.
