  • Tons of standard features, smooth highway ride, good value compared to luxury rivals.
  • LOWS
  • Poor fuel economy, premium price minus a premium badge, vague steering.
  • VERDICT
  • If you want a luxury sedan but are resolutely averse to snobbery, the elegant-but-humble K900 could be perfect.

Overview

If Kia decided to build its version of the dearly departed Lincoln Town Car, the result would be the K900. Large and luxurious, and with a ride that melts away highway miles, the K900 is Kia’s biggest and most expensive sedan. However, it still pushes the value button when compared to and pricier and more posh rivals from the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, and Lexus. While it costs thousands less than these luxury-badged competitors, the driving experience shows the K900 has some limitations.

What's New for 2017?

For 2017, both blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert have been added to the K900’s already ample list of standard active safety equipment.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The K900’s standard powertrain is a 3.8-liter V-6 that sends a healthy 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels courtesy of an eight-speed automatic transmission. This same quick-witted gearbox comes with the optional 420-hp 5.0-liter V-8, an engine that provides even smoother and more seamless acceleration. If you value a suspension that’s soft and cossetting, you’ll love the pillow-like ride of this Kia sedan. Too bad the steering has a complete and total disinterest in anything but sedate driving. Plow the K900 hard into a corner and hold on tight, because you’ll feel every bit of this car’s substantial girth. Fuel economy is also poor, even with the V-6, and all-wheel drive is not offered.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Acres of space and loads of standard features best summarize the cabin of the K900. As you'd expect considering its size, there’s more than enough headroom and legroom in either row. What comes as a surprise is how many standard features Kia loads into this car, even given the fact that it’s the brand’s most expensive model. Every K900 comes with leather seating surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, navigation, tri-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. There's not a lot missing, but the Luxury trim adds a few touches, like premium leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, wood accents, and an upgraded sound system. For the ultimate, the VIP package includes quilted leather seating surfaces, additional wood trim, soft-close doors, and reclining rear seats. The hands-free power trunk opens to reveal 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is about average for a sedan this size.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The K900’s 9.2-inch infotainment screen comes with navigation, satellite radio, a pair of USB ports, Bluetooth, and a 14-speaker stereo system. Control is via a knob on the center console. While that’s not as simple as pushing a touchscreen, it works fine and is easy to manage once you’re familiar with the multitude of commands and menus. Optional tech features include a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, a 17-speaker Lexicon surround-sound audio system, and a head-up instrument display.

Safety Features and Crash Test Ratings
