Overview

While some compact crossovers trade exceptionalism for mass appeal, the Honda CR-V manages to sidestep that tradeoff. Like most other vehicles of its kind, the CR-V places both comfort and practicality at the top of its importance hierarchy; its smooth ride keeps the cabin placidly calm and free of disturbances, there's plenty of head and legroom for all five passengers, and its cargo hold is extraordinarily roomy compared to most of its competition.

Besides being remarkably well-sorted in all of the areas that you'd want an SUV to be, the CR-V is surprisingly enjoyable to pilot—a rarity in a segment that often overlooks driving satisfaction. Its 190-hp turbocharged four-cylinder lacks some oomph but hums harmoniously, and the CR-V's well-developed chassis grants it uncommonly agile handling. For those looking for a bit more power and improved fuel economy, Honda also makes the CR-V Hybrid, which does everything that the nonhybrid model does, but better.

Expert Tip: While the CR-V is the perfect compact SUV all-arounder, the Mazda CX-50 offers more luxurious interior accommodations and sharper handling, and the Ford Bronco Sport is more capable when pavement turns to dirt.

What's New for 2027?

Last year, the CR-V received a notable update to its tech suite, complete with a new infotainment arrangement, a larger digital instrument display, and a few software changes. With that update only a year in the rearview, we don’t expect anything new for the CR-V this year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The CR-V LX, EX, and EX-L are all gas-only models. The Sport, Sport-L, and Sport Touring models come exclusively with the hybrid powertrain, and these are what we'd recommend most. (We review them separately.) Of the nonhybrid models, we'd choose the EX-L for its generous list of equipment. It comes with leather upholstery, a power tailgate, and a large digital instrument display, among other features.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engines: 190-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder
  • Transmission: continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT)
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive

Behind the CR-V's upright grille is a standard 190-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder. It pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive. This setup is standard on the LX, EX, and EX-L models. Every CR-V has hill-descent control that helps modulate the compact SUV's speed on steep or slippery declines, and new traction-management programming should improve low-speed off-road performance. Most models are fitted with a set of 18-inch wheels. While it lacks the handling thrills we love in the Mazda CX-50 and the Volkswagen Tiguan, the CR-V provides a smooth ride and enough moxie to avoid being boring.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Test: 8.1 seconds (EX-L)

In Comparison: While the Honda CR-V sits near the back of the compact crossover pack in terms of acceleration, it is still quicker than both the nonhybrid Mazda CX-50 and Volkswagen Tiguan, which reach 60 mph in 8.4 seconds and 8.5 seconds, respectively.

Towing and Payload Capacity

  • Max Towing: 1500 pounds

The Honda CR-V can tow up to 1500 pounds when equipped with optional towing accessories.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 31 mpg
  • EPA City Ratings: 27-28 mpg
  • EPA Highway Ratings: 31-33 mpg

The EPA grants the front-wheel drive CR-V fuel economy ratings of 28 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined. Adding all-wheel drive drops those figures to 27 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. When we last tested an all-wheel drive EX-L trim on our real-world 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, it matched its EPA highway rating, registering 31 mpg.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The CR-V's handsome interior design is highlighted by a honeycomb-textured insert spanning most of the dash, discreetly hiding the air vents. The steering wheel frames a partially digital gauge cluster in LX and EX trims and a digital 10.2-inch gauge cluster in the EX-L.

Second Row: The CR-V's rear cabin is spacious and comfortable, with reclining back seats and plenty of rear legroom.

Cargo Capacity: There's 39 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row with the adjustable load floor in its lowest position, which is enough space to fit 12 carry-ons behind the rear seats, two more than the Toyota RAV4 can manage.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 9.0-inch touchscreen
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audio System: four-speaker audio system (standard), six-speaker audio system (optional), eight-speaker audio system (optional)

The CR-V's infotainment system operates through a 9.0-inch touchscreen. The setup features standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Built-in navigation, a wireless smartphone-charging pad, and two USB-C ports for rear-seat passengers are also standard equipment.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Honda equips every CR-V with a boatload of standard driver-assistance technology. Along with automated emergency braking, the compact SUV comes with a driver-attention monitor, lane-keeping assist, and a back-seat reminder.

  • Standard Safety Features: forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control

For information about the CR-V's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

There's nothing particularly special about the CR-V's limited and powertrain warranties. Both include coverage periods comparable to most competitors. However, Honda started offering complimentary scheduled maintenance on 2024 CR-V models with one year or 12,000 miles of coverage. That continues.

  • Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: one year or 12,000 miles

C/D Test Results and Specs

Each year, we put hundreds of vehicles through our rigorous instrumented testing regimen. If the data in the chart below is for a different model year, that's because this vehicle hasn't changed from when we last tested it, and the test results remain accurate.
