Overview

The Honda Accord sedan comes by its accolades honestly, combining practicality, efficiency, and smart styling with a balance between ride and handling that's far more refined and engaging than it needs to be for the segment. The spacious interior offers room for five, the interior material quality is satisfying, and the control layout is logical.

Shoppers have the choice of either a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder or a four-cylinder hybrid setup, both with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. Both powertrains deliver smooth performance, the hybrid offering brisk acceleration, a smooth-as-silk engine note, and remarkable fuel efficiency for such a large car. With the ranks of the sensible sedan still shrinking, it's comforting to know Honda is still offering such a well-balanced four-door family vehicle.

Expert Tip: If you enjoy the Accord's blend of features and performance but just can't get past the lack of a manual transmission, you'll want to check out the smaller, sportier Honda Civic Si.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We'd recommend upgrading to the Sport Hybrid, which is the least-expensive way to get the more powerful hybrid engine. The Sport does not have leather seating—you need to go up one more rung to get that—but it does have a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, the larger touchscreen, heated seats, and a power sunroof.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engines: 192-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder (standard), 2.0-liter four-cylinder with two electric motors; combined 204 hp (hybrid)
  • Transmission: continuously variable automatic
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel-drive

The Accord's LX and SE trims are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 192 horsepower and drives the front wheels through a CVT. All higher-spec models use the hybrid powertrain—one of the very best on the market. It consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors that combine for 204 horsepower. With either powertrain, the Accord is exclusively front-wheel drive.

The Accord is smooth, quiet, and composed, and remains as fun to drive as ever. Its handling is confidence-inspiring, with precise steering, well-controlled body motions, and a compliant ride—a combination that drivers are sure to appreciate as much as our editors do.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Test: 7.3 seconds (nonhybrid), 6.7 seconds (hybrid)

In Comparison: The Accord's numbers bracket the Toyota Camry's 6.8-second result (all Camrys are hybrids now), but they're well behind the 290-hp Hyundai Sonata N-Line, which is the segment's speed demon with a 5.4-second 60-mph time.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 40 mpg (nonhybrid), 36 mpg (hybrid)
  • EPA City Ratings: 29–51 mpg
  • EPA Highway Ratings: 37–44 mpg

The EPA estimates that the nonhybrid model will deliver 29 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined. The hybrid is rated as high as 51 mpg city, 44 mpg highway, and 48 mpg combined.

On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, a nonhybrid Accord managed 40 mpg. A hybrid we tested achieved 36 mpg on the highway, whereas a Camry hybrid with all-wheel drive managed 43 mpg. For more information about the Accord’s fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Like the exterior, the Accord's cabin wears a sleek design with elements shared elsewhere in the Honda lineup that help tie it together with familial DNA. The air vents, for example, hide behind an expanse of honeycomb trim, a clever design element also found in both the Civic and the CR-V SUV.

Second Row: The rear seat legroom and knee clearance are expansive. Headroom, however, is less so, and the sloping roofline means passengers will need to duck when getting in.

Cargo Capacity: The Accord's trunk measures 16.7 cubic feet and can be expanded by folding the rear seatbacks. That's big enough for seven carry-on suitcases inside the trunk, and 20 cases with the rear seats folded down.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 9.0-inch touchscreen (standard), 12.3-inch touchscreen (optional)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audio System: 4-speaker stereo (standard), 8-speaker stereo (optional), 12-speaker Bose stereo (optional)

An upright 9.0- or 12.3-inch touchscreen display provides easy access to the Accord's infotainment system, and all models, regardless of trim, come with a 10.2-inch digital gauge display standard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included across the lineup, and the connectivity is now wireless on all models. A wireless phone charger is also standard, as are four USB-C ports, two each front and rear.

The LX trim gets a four-speaker stereo, but SE trim levels and up get eight speakers. High-end Touring trims come with a 6.0-inch head-up display and a 12-speaker Bose stereo system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

All Accords are equipped with a suite of driver-assistance tech that Honda calls Honda Sensing. The bundle of features includes basics such as automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning, as well as convenience functions such as adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.

  • Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control
  • Optional Safety Features: blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-traffic alert

For information about the Accord's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Honda's warranty coverage is adequate but falls short of the class-leading coverage periods provided by Hyundai. Like the Toyota Camry, the Accord stands out in this class by offering complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: one year or 12,000 miles
