Overview
The Spark, introduced in the U.S. for 2013, was new territory for Chevrolet in North America. Based on a design from General Motors’ South Korean operations, it's a subcompact hatchback, in the same size category as the Fiat 500, though with four doors instead of two. The Spark was redesigned for the 2016 model year with a more mature, less “cute” look and a lower ride height allowing for more comfortable seats. The second-generation Spark got a new, larger engine as well, a 1.4-liter inline-four powering the front wheels. The 2017 Chevy Spark comes standard with some safety and technology features not even offered as options on many rival entry-priced cars.
What's New for 2017?
Chevrolet introduced the Spark ACTIV for 2017, with unique front and rear fascias, a hike of 0.4 inches in ride height, a new 15-inch wheel design, unique grille with ACTIV badging, fog lamps, and contrasting cladding, rocker moldings, and roof rails. Inside, the Spark ACTIV has standard black leatherette heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. New exterior paint choices for the entire Spark line are Red Hot, Mosaic Black, Nightfall Gray, Brimstone, and Mint.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Spark's 98-hp, 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine powers the front wheels through a five-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission {CVT). With either combo, acceleration is modest, to put it mildly, though it’s fine for daily commutes and running errands. The Spark’s chassis is 77 percent stiffer than the previous model’s, and that results in much-improved ride quality, with well-damped body motions and minimal body roll. Still, the Spark is bouncy on uneven surfaces, and the harshest bumps are barely isolated. But the steering is light, and the little car can be fun to drive around town.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Spark's cabin provides ample headroom and fairly comfortable front seats, and although space in the rear is tight for most adults, it's not as cramped as that of some competitors. There is a lot of plastic in the interior, but it looks and feels more solidly put together than many rivals. The base Spark LS comes meagerly equipped with manual roll-up windows and a four-speaker stereo, which makes the extra charge for the higher trim levels well worth the money. They bring such features as power windows, cruise control, power door locks, upgraded upholstery, and heated seats. There's a reasonable amount of space behind the back seat, but an awkward cargo hold requires lifting an item up before taking it in or out of the rear hatch area.
Infotainment and Connectivity
As a first new car for many younger consumers, the Chevy Spark’s equipment list emphasizes state-of-the-art connectivity and infotainment technology for not a lot of money. The latest-generation MyLink infotainment system is standard, with such features as a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi, a USB port, and a four-speaker stereo. Higher trims bring a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio.
