Overview

The S60, which was completely redesigned for 2019, delivers unique styling, high-tech features, and engaging driving dynamics that help it stand out among popular mid-size alternatives. As with the Volvo V60 wagon, the sedan version flaunts a lovely exterior that incorporates the company's signature "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights and subtly creased sheetmetal.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

The 2019 Volvo S60 is available with multiple powertrain choices that include a performance model. The base T5 has a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the front wheels; the T6 version has standard all-wheel drive and gains 66 horsepower with the addition of a supercharger. Power increases to 400 ponies on the all-wheel-drive T8 plug-in hybrid, and the top-of-the-line T8 Polestar Engineered is even sportier. Its plug-in-hybrid powertrain makes 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque and features all-wheel drive. Along with adaptive dampers and exclusive 19-inch wheels, the Polestar edition is solely available as part of the Care by Volvo subscription plan. During a first drive of the higher-spec S60 trim levels, we were extremely impressed with how well they handled. The steering proved to be quick and precise along twisty roads, and there was a remarkable amount of cornering grip. Likewise, both the 316-hp T6 model and the powerful Polestar Engineered were effectively quick and responsive. These initial driving impressions make the S60 a legitimate contender to rivals such as the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-AMG C43.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the 2019 S60 mixes premium materials and a clean design into an upscale atmosphere. A set of supremely comfortable seats are available as well as deluxe features such as a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. While the tablet-style Sensus infotainment system has standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, it can be frustrating to operate. In typical Volvo fashion, the S60 has a variety of driver-assistance features that includes standard lane-keeping assist and optional semi-autonomous driving with adaptive cruise control.
