2017 Subaru Crosstrek
- Rugged image both inside and out, standard all-wheel drive, less bulky and better fuel economy than a typical SUV.
- Underwhelming four-cylinder engine, interior is utilitarian even in higher trims, CVT saps engine power.
- Another 20 horsepower would be appreciated, but as it stands, the Crosstrek is still an endearing alternative to an SUV.

Overview
The Subaru Crosstrek packs standard all-wheel drive and agile steering response into its quirky upright wagon shape. What the Crosstrek lacks is the horsepower to match its rough-and-tumble outdoorsy image. As long as you’re not in a hurry to get to the ski slopes, or find the best Instagram spot for autumn foliage pics, the Crosstrek has plenty going for it. The cabin is spacious, and the materials feel built to last, even if the overall layout won’t win any design awards.
What's New for 2017?
Subaru has dropped the Crosstrek hybrid from the lineup for the 2017 model year. That’s not an altogether bad thing, considering the hybrid’s substantial price premium over the standard model.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Crosstrek has one choice of engine, and it’s not going to get any pulses racing. This 147-hp 2.0-liter, boxer-style four-cylinder is fine if you don’t expect much from it. Fuel economy is impressive, so at least you can feel smug about not having a fuel-guzzling SUV parked in your driveway. Coupled to standard all-wheel drive and equipped with a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the Crosstrek shines on curvy roads or the tight confines of city driving. The nimble handling makes it easy to place, while the suspension is taut but easily copes with large bumps or undulations in the road.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The upright shape of the Crosstrek creates an airy and spacious cabin environment. Outward visibility is excellent, and the plastics used throughout the interior have a hard-wearing look and feel to them. True, the layout of the dashboard itself is simplistic, and even the Limited trim can only do so much to hide this Subaru’s utilitarian roots. You’ll find 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the split-folding rear seats. With them down, this expands to about 51 cubic feet. That should be more than enough for a Crosstrek owner’s adventure gear. Heated front seats come on higher trims, which is good news considering the Crosstrek’s appeal to those living in chilly climates.
Infotainment and Connectivity
It takes only a minute to get familiar with the Crosstrek’s controls. This includes Subaru’s Starlink infotainment system which, in standard format, features a 6.2-inch touchscreen, a single USB port, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker stereo. Moving up in trim levels adds a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio. Onboard navigation is optional.
