The new fourth-generation 2024 Toyota Tacoma is leaps and bounds better than the archaic pickup it replaces, and the TRD Off-Road trim beefs up the standard truck with some dirt-friendly kit.
The 2024 Tacoma is available with a rear coil-spring suspension, and the setup on the TRD Off-Road pairs with exclusive Bilstein external-reservoir dampers.
Along with the sophisticated suspension, the TRD Off-Road rolls on 33-inch BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A tires that provide a sufficiently compliant ride.
The Tacoma TRD Off-Road we tested made the trip to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds. That's about a half-second quicker than the last-gen trucks.
The new Tacoma finished the quarter-mile in 15.3 seconds and 91 mph. Again, that's about a half-second quicker than before.
Most new Tacomas have a standard turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four with either 270 or 278 horsepower, depending on the transmission. Automatic-equipped models like our test truck have the higher output.
The modernized Tacoma should have better fuel economy than its forebears. The four-wheel-drive, crew-cab model is expected to get 19 mpg city and 23 highway, and it returned 22 mpg on our 75-mph highway test.
The Tacoma's interior is vastly improved. The driver's seating position feels properly elevated, and the physical knobs and toggles carry over with some additional sturdiness thrown in.
While it gains an inch of legroom, the crew cab (a.k.a. Double Cab) still has a cramped back seat. That's one of the few areas where the new Tacoma isn't much better.
Toyota did a lot to ensure the new Tacoma felt at home in 2024, including finally adopting rear disc brakes and offering power-adjustable front seats.
Our Tacoma TRD Off-Road test truck had an as-tested price of $54,155. Of course, a big chunk of that comes from the $8530 Premium package that adds extras like heated and ventilated front seats, an upgraded sound system, and a power open/close tailgate.
