Overview

The Ram ProMaster cargo van is a gigantic blank slate when it comes to turning this workhorse into exactly the kind of four-wheeled toolbox needed to get any job done. Available in 1500, 2500, and 3500 format, with increasing payloads, the ProMaster rides on wheelbases that stretch from a standard 118 inches upward to 136 and 159 inches. There are low- and high-roof models, a choice of 3.6-liter gasoline-fed V-6 or optional 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder, and chassis cab and cutaway models for the ultimate in customization. Rivals to the Ram ProMaster include the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit.

What's New for 2017?

For 2017, Ram has made the Uconnect 3.0 infotainment system available on all ProMaster variants. A wider rear axle is fitted to the chassis cab and cutaway models. Diesel versions now come standard with an electronic parking brake. And upfit connectors and rear wiring are standard on all ProMasters.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The ProMaster's standard 3.6-liter V-6 is a very familiar site in a wide range of Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram vehicles. This engine sends 280 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the ProMaster is not offered with optional all-wheel drive. While added grip can be useful, the benefit is that the ProMaster has an extremely tight turning radius for a vehicle this size, not to mention the lowest load floor in its class, since there’s no driveshaft to engineer around. The optional powerplant is a 3.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder that produces 174 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque at only 1,400 rpm. The diesel is the better choice if fuel economy is a major concern, though the standard V-6 does a fine job of getting this large van down the road.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Big and configurable, that’s how best to sum up the utilitarian interior of the Ram ProMaster. Front-wheel drive means the ProMaster has the lowest floor in its class. This makes loading cargo, or simply getting in and out, that much easier than rivals from Ford and Mercedes-Benz. A pneumatically suspended driver’s seat is available and could be ideal for van shoppers with long-haul drives in their work agenda. Swiveling front seats are also optional. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are available and highly recommended, particularly for anyone ordering the cargo variant with blanked-off side and rear windows.

Infotainment and Connectivity

This is a work vehicle, so tech touches aren’t going to rival those in a typical passenger car or SUV, although a few more modern conveniences would be appreciated. Standard equipment includes USB and auxiliary ports, plus a four-speaker stereo. The available Uconnect 3.0 infotainment upgrade is a handy feature and is now conveniently offered on all ProMaster models.

Safety Features and Crash Test Ratings

For more information about the Ram ProMaster‘s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty

Some older vehicles are still eligible for coverage under a manufacturer's Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program. For more information visit our guide to every manufacturer's CPO program.
