Overview

The 2019 Sport Turismo wagon proffers the Porsche Panamera's hatchback style in a more versatile package—versatile being a relative term, because the Sport Turismo's cargo hold is among the smallest in its class. Offered exclusively with all-wheel drive, the Sport Turismo is available with several distinct powertrains, including a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid and a high-powered twin-turbo V-8. All Sport Turismo models move with gusto, and while they handle well by most standards, they don't live up to Porsche's legendary reputation for otherworldly dynamics and driver involvement. Nevertheless, if you accept this German wagonette as the luxury-lined cruise missile that it is, then you'll surely be pleased with the Sport Turismo's sultry style, comfortable ride, and high-quality cabin.

What's New for 2019?

The 2019 Panamera Sport Turismo receives some new options and revised packages. A head-up display is now available, and Power Steering Plus (Porsche's name for speed-sensitive steering) is now available as a standalone option. The Brushed Aluminum Interior package now offers an anodized black finish. Likewise, interior trim packages no longer include the center-console cover. Other updates include new colors for the deviated stitching options and Turbo models add a newly designed steering wheel.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We'd put our money on the base Panamera 4 Sport Turismo—the 4 designates all-wheel drive—which includes items such as a 330-hp turbocharged V-6, four-corner air suspension, panoramic sunroof, and navigation system. With the money we saved by not choosing the pricier and more powerful 4S and 4 E-Hybrid trims, we'd add a number of options to make sure our Sport Turismo feels as special as it looks. Specifically, we'd add a heated steering wheel, swankier 19-inch Panamera S wheels, brushed-aluminum interior trim to replace the standard smudge-attracting glossy-black trim pieces, a surround-view camera to assist with parking, and massaging front seats for legitimate luxury.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Likes: All powertrains have a polished punch, exceptional automatic transmission, imperceptible hybrid operation.
Dislikes: Un-Porsche-like steering feel, hybrids have sloppy brake-pedal feedback.

The Sport Turismo's numerous engine options include a standard 330-hp turbocharged V-6, a twin-turbo V-6 that makes up to 457 horsepower, or a 462-hp gasoline-electric E-Hybrid. All of these setups offer the oomph needed for daily driving—and in most cases, a lot more. The ultra-high-performance Turbo and the extra-expensive Turbo S E-Hybrid variants develop 550 and 667 ponies, respectively. A clairvoyant eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is the icing on top of the Sport Turismo's powertrain cake. Refinement is never wanting in the Panamera Sport Turismo, and each of the Porsche's powertrains packs a polished punch. Noise, vibration, and harshness are kept in check throughout the Sport Turismo lineup, the engines' sounds are expensive and sweet, and the transition between power sources in the hybrid model is almost imperceptible.

A standard air suspension and sticky performance tires allow the Panamera Sport Turismo to float over ragged roads and corner as if it's on rails. Unfortunately, Panameras feature some of the least communicative steering we've experienced in a car wearing the Porsche badge. Those in search of additional dynamism can opt for items such as a speed-sensitive power-steering system, rear-axle steering, active anti-roll bars, and the Sport Chrono package. While the Sport Chrono package is a fun—albeit gimmicky—option, we'd pass on the steering amenities, which add to the bottom line and further muddle the Panamera Sport Turismo's somewhat distant steering feel. The standard Sport Turismo's braking setup provides excellent feel and modulation that make smooth stops easy. We can't say the same about the brake pedal of the hybrid model, which suffers from jarring and uneven response as the braking system transitions from regenerative to mechanical braking. Typical of Porsche, Sport Turismo models also offer race-car braking performance in the form of massive carbon-ceramic disc brakes clamped down on by chunky 10-piston front calipers.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Fuel efficiency is not the Panamera Sport Turismo's strong suit. That said, the Porsche wagon drinks fuel at a rate that's par for the class. Those looking for more efficiency can opt for the V-6 4 E-Hybrid. Although it actually did slightly worse than the base Panamera 4 on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route—27 mpg versus 28—it does offer a limited all-electric driving range of 14 miles before needing to fire up its gasoline engine. The Turbo S E-Hybrid, with a combined 667 horsepower and price tag north of $190,000, also provides 14 miles of electrified driving range and had the highest real-world fuel economy among Sport Turismos at 29 mpg. Meanwhile, the regular Turbo Sport Turismo returned a comparatively lowly 23 mpg—matching its EPA-rated highway estimate.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

Likes: Top-notch interior quality, lengthy options list, ample cubby storage.
Dislikes: Various design blunders, compromised outward visibility, disappointing cargo space.

The interior of the Panamera Sport Turismo looks and feels every bit its nearly six-figure price. Still, quality materials and exciting design can't cover the cabin's ergonomic foibles, which include an angled touch-sensitive central control panel for operating key convenience features and a wonky climate-control vent that can only be adjusted by pecking at the infotainment screen rather than manually moving the vent slats. As with any Porsche, the Sport Turismo's options list is long, pricey, and includes items ranging from the lavish (massaging front and rear seats) to the ridiculous (leather-covered climate-control vents). Although taller riders may find rear-seat legroom to be on the snug side, the Panamera Sport Turismo offers plenty of rear headroom for passengers large and small.

While the Panamera Sport Turismo's 12.3-inch infotainment screen looks pretty, its attractive wrapper hides a messy interface with overcomplicated menus, ergonomic challenges, and functional limitations. Otherwise, its infotainment system has standard desirable features such as Apple CarPlay, built-in navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Strangely, Android Auto and wireless charging are unavailable throughout the lineup.

The Panamera Sport Turismo's cargo bay is noticeably smaller than its wagon rivals, but it held seven carry-on bags back there and another 13 with the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat folded. The Sport Turismo's lift-over height is on the taller side of the class, but it's much lower than the regular hatchback. Generous door pockets, a reasonably sized glovebox, and an awkwardly shaped center-console bin serve as the Porsche station wagon's main interior storage spaces.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It does come standard with a bevy of airbags, but most driver-assistance technology costs extra. Still, innovative options include a night-vision system and Porsche's InnoDrive adaptive cruise control. Key safety features include:

  • Available forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Every current Porsche model, including the Sport Turismo, has a competitive limited and powertrain warranty. Its 24-hour roadside-assistance program spans the same amount of time, while complimentary scheduled maintenance is also included for a short period.

  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles
