Porsche builds more variations on its 911 than a French patisserie has varieties of croissants. The 911 T represents the company's Keep It Simple, Stupid approach to building a car for discerning enthusiast drivers. It's not the quickest, fastest, raciest, most luxurious, or most expensive 911, but it's undeniably one of the most involving and entertaining to drive. Sweet, indeed.
Porsche bases the T's recipe on the base 911 Carrera coupe, then eliminates some sound deadening and substitutes thinner glass. The lighter, standard six-speed gearbox—no automatic is available—also helps the T to weigh roughly 26 pounds less than the base Carrera coupe, according to Porsche.
The 911 T is powered by the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six engine as the base Carrera. It makes 388 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 331 pound-feet of torque at 2000 rpm.
The 911 T incorporates all the important mechanical essentials into one package: the base flat-six, the six-speed manual gearbox, adaptive dampers, the Sport Chrono package, a lowered ride height, rear-axle steering, a sport exhaust, the GTS front splitter, and larger 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels shod in fat summer rubber.
At 3355 pounds, our 911 T test car weighed 117 pounds less than a base Carrera we previously tested, though their equipment levels differed.
The 911 T shot to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and crossed the quarter-mile stripe at 12.0 seconds at 118 mph. The base Carrera coupe is slightly quicker still, as its dual-clutch automatic enables more aggressive launch-control starts and can shift gears more quickly than a human can.
Our Carrera T wore a coat of Ice Grey Metallic paint ($860), which helped push the total price to $162,515.
