The Civic just regained a hybrid setup for the first time in a decade, but Honda's already looking to the future and updating that setup. We recently had the opportunity to drive a prototype model with Honda's forthcoming hybrid system to replace the offerings in the Civic and Accord.
Honda may have just released the new Civic Hybrid for 2025, but the automaker is already working on an updated version.
We recently had a chance to drive a prototype car with the new hybrid system at Honda's Tochigi Proving Ground near Utsunomiya, Japan.
The hybrid system uses the same basic setup as before, with an updated 2.0-liter four-cylinder at its core.
The high-output and generator motors have been updated, as well, and are more compact than before.
The battery is new, too, and is located under the rear seat.
According to Honda, the changes to the system account for nearly 200 pounds of weight reduction compared with the current setup.
Honda plans to use the same battery between several platforms to bring costs down across the lineup.
We'll have to wait until a bit closer to its full reveal to get official power specifications.
Honda hopes to release the updated version in the second half of 2026, but we may have to wait until 2027 to get it in the United States.
