As the first European production car with a turbocharged engine, the BMW 2002 Turbo was a revelation for sporty compact cars when it debuted in 1973. More than 50 years later, the M2 is a modern equivalent of that famed model, and BMW has revealed a limited-production M2 Turbo Design Edition as an homage.
The M2 Turbo Design Edition features a number of visual callbacks to the original 2002 Turbo and will be produced in extremely limited numbers.
Hand-painted M tricolor stripes outline the edges of the hood and circle the top of the trunklid.
No, the backward lettering on the hood's power dome isn't the handiwork of a drunken factory worker. In a rearview mirror, the text reads "turbo," a callback to the same inverted text on the 2002 Turbo's front air dam.
Black M dual-spoke wheels come standard, but Matte Gold Bronze M Performance wheels can be optioned for $6266.
Inside, the M2 Turbo Design Edition features a heated M Alcantara steering wheel and M sport seats wrapped in black Vernasca leather.
No auto here: The special-edition M2 comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.
If you prefer aggressive bolstering, M Carbon bucket seats can also be ordered for $4500.
There's no shortage of special badging here. "Turbo" adornments can be found on the trunklid, center console, and doorsill guards.
The M2 Turbo Design Edition makes use of the standard car's 473-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. According to BMW, the vehicle tops out at 155 mph, or 177 mph when equipped with the $2500 M Driver's package.
A carbon-fiber roof with subtle M striping is another reminder of the special edition's motorsports heritage.
