Subaru has begun to invest heavily in hybrid powertrains, following up the 2025 Forester Hybrid with the new Crosstrek Hybrid, which improves the subcompact SUV's fuel economy while maintaining its quintessential Subaru traits.
The Crosstrek Hybrid looks essentially the same as the standard Crosstrek but features less plastic cladding along the side sills and a few small trim changes on the front end.
A set of unique 18-inch wheels, which Subaru says are inspired by ice axes, and "Hybrid" badges round out the changes.
Under the hood lies the familiar 2.5-liter flat-four engine, running the Atkinson cycle for improved efficiency, although power drops to 162 horsepower.
The 18-hp deficit to the standard Crosstrek is more than made up for by the main electric motor, which injects up to 118 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, bringing total output to 194 horsepower.
A second electric motor serves as a generator to replenish the small lithium-ion battery and also acts as a starter for the gas engine.
The hybrid powertrain is paired with an eCVT, and the Crosstrek Hybrid retains a mechanical all-wheel-drive system.
