In a perfect world, Ford would've brought something as cool as the Focus R to market in the United States. But while we didn't get this high-zoot Focus at dealers, we were able to take its concept for a spin.

Focus R show-car interior is accented with sparing and tasteful touches of brushed aluminum and blue anodized trim. Especially tasty: the billet shifter knob, Momo pedals, and hefty emergency brake handle.

The show-car engine is dressed to kill. A chromed air-to-liquid intercooler displaces the battery to the trunk. A braided-steel throttle cable and chromed bell crank replace plastic cable that previously crossed over the engine.

Functional front-fender air extractors lower underhood temperatures but would require shielding to prevent road grime from sandblasting the doors. Wheels, tires, and brakes are show-car big; our test car's were narrower, and production pieces would be even smaller.

LED lights behind smoked lenses look cool, but cost makes them unlikely for production.
