We've put together a test of the latest competitors from the all-weather tire category that promise to be the solution for dry, wet, and snowy surfaces. These are essentially all-season tires with a snow rating—the three-peak mountain snowflake. The test results prove that none of them perform strongly enough in a variety of environments to be a complete replacement for swapping between two sets of tires for summer and winter. However, the top finishers do put up one helluva fight.
Slippery when wet, Tire Rack's testing facility in South Bend, Indiana, was a great place to strap on the testing equipment and get to measuring.

To keep things fair, our technical assistants swapped tires while we kept our eyes pointed away from the sidewall. And a tent kept tires waiting to be tested out of the sun to prevent major temperature differences. The identity of which tires we'd tested weren't revealed to us until after the results were in at the very end.
All of our winter testing took place at the Keweenaw Research Facility in Calumet, Michigan. "Say yah to da U.P., eh!"
