The MG has undergone a transformation since the company's early years as Morris Garages. For one thing, the brand has been under Chinese ownership for two decades already, and this inexpensive electric SUV is one of the fruits of that relationship. What has changed much less is the country of Scotland, which retains its charm and appeal for the road tripper, even though its citizens mostly failed to notice the MG4 EV we were in as we passed by. We bravely headed off for a tour of the Scottish Highlands in an EV, confident we'd be able to find charging infrastructure.
The MG4 was the fourth-biggest seller among EVs in the U.K. last year.
The MG4 is not beautiful or even cute. What it is is a bargain.
The MG4's infotainment system was a bit minimal, with a less than helpful navigation system.
But we were in a beautiful place, at least.
We discovered that charging in the U.K. never exceeded the cost of filling up with unleaded gasoline there.
Our Trophy Extended Range model was claimed to be able to go from 10 to 80 percent charge in 39 minutes.
This model costs about $45,000 at current exchange rates—not cheap but thousands less than many competitors.
