You'd have to be Mr. Magoo to not notice the similarities between the Ineos Grenadier and the old Land Rover Defender that inspired it.
The CEO of Ineos tried to buy the tooling for the old Land Rover Defender from the British automaker. They told him to kick rocks, more or less.
So he did what any billionaire petrochemical CEO would do and built his own homage.
At $73,100 to start, the Grenadier is way less expensive than a Mercedes G-class and a little more than the least costly Defender 110.
A BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six provides 281 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque.
The straight-six will move all 5901 pounds of Grenadier to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, which is 5.0 seconds quicker than a 1993 Defender 110.
So, it's not entirely old-school.
