For the 2025 model year, Toyota gifted its GR Corolla hot hatchback an optional eight-speed automatic transmission, along with a host of other mechanical upgrades to make it more adept at driving on a racetrack. But don't worry, the GR Corolla still comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox.
All GR Corollas now produce 295 pound-feet of torque—previously only the Morizo limited edition did so. That represents a 22-lb-ft increase for the other GR Corolla models.
The automatic gearbox features closely spaced gears with similar ratios through the first six gears to the manual transmission, creating a consistent character no matter how you change gears.
Toyota says it programmed the automatic gearbox to learn the driver's behavior based on throttle and brake application in order to better predict when to execute shifts.
Toyota changed how the torque adjustment works, with a new Track mode that can continuously vary between a 60:40 and 30:70 front-to-rear split depending on the behavior of the car.
The turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-three still spits out 300 horsepower, but when hooked up to the automatic gearbox it now features launch control.
Toyota aims to improve cooling with a new front bumper with larger openings, as well as a sub-radiator that is optional on the Premium and standard on the Premium Plus. Automatic models also come with a transmission oil cooler.
Toyota revised the suspension with new rebound springs at the front and rear; it also revised the anti-roll bar in a bid to improve handling in the corners and the trailing arm mounting point to minimize rear squat during acceleration.
All GR Corollas now have standard front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials.
The GR Corolla's all-wheel-drive system remains excellent, with a knob that can adjust the torque split between the front and rear.
