Like it or not, the Mercedes M-class was the progenitor of the luxury-marque-SUV craze that continues to this day. Things were different then—Mercedes developed a trucklike frame just for this vehicle—but it laid the groundwork for the sea of tall-riding luxobarges that inundate American roads today.
