RV manufacturer Thor Industries and EV startup Harbinger Motors are teaming up to modernize large Class A motorhomes with plug-in-hybrid RVs that also feature improved driving dynamics. The Thor Test Vehicle pictured here is a prototype of the production models that are scheduled to go on sale in 2025.
Though the Thor Test Vehicle prototype is smaller than some Class A motorhomes, the largest type of RVs on the market, it still weighs approximately 14,500 pounds.
The Test Vehicle is what's called a series hybrid, where an electric motor drives the wheels, and a range-extending engine exists solely to charge the batteries.
Production models will likely feature distinctive styling and roof-mounted solar panels like the prototype.
The Test Vehicle is not only noticeably quicker than conventional Class A RVs, it's also easier to drive and maneuver.
The Test Vehicle is said to have about 500 miles of range.
For improved aerodynamics, the Test Vehicle's A/C unit is located under its body, rather than the more conventional roof placement.
Harbinger Motors's chassis is unique among medium-duty truck platforms in that it features a car-like control-arm front suspension with coil springs, rather than a primitive beam axle and leaf springs.
Harbinger has yet to disclose the final supplier for the RV's range-extending gas engine, but the prototype appears to employ a conventional 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit.
Although the Test Vehicle has a conventional power-steering system with a physical connection to the front wheels, production versions will feature by-wire steering.
Harbinger says the Test Vehicle's batteries can be recharged from 20 to 90 percent in about one hour at a DC fast-charger.
The Test Vehicle features four of Harbinger's 35.0-kWh battery modules for a total of 140.0 kilowatt-hours of usable capacity.
The Harbinger chassis features a semi-independent De Dion rear axle supported by leaf springs.
Harbinger says its suspension arrangement saves weight compared to conventional solid-axle layouts, with the weight of its RV platform coming in between that of traditional gas- and diesel-powered units.
