When is a six-figure, 12-cylinder supersedan a bargain? In the case of the Mercedes-Maybach S680, this ultraposh four-door rings in some $50,000 below its competition. And with V-12s slowly disappearing from terra firma, this is a car worth celebrating.
The Mercedes-Maybach S680 is large and in charge. Its 113.7-inch wheelbase isn't far from a Chevy Suburban's.
Under the hood is a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 making 621 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.
Even with a 5301-pound curb weight, all that torque rockets the S680 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and on to the quarter-mile in 11.9 seconds at 120 mph.
In case you forgot, the C7 Corvette needed about that much time to reach 60 mph too.
Perhaps even more impressive than its acceleration is its grip. Around our skidpad, the S680 achieved 0.92 g, which isn't a number we're used to seeing from gigantic house-money limousines.
Some of the S680's agility comes from the car's rear-axle steering, which can add up to 10 degrees of countersteer when the car is wearing 19-inch wheels. That said, cars with larger rollers are limited to just 4.5 degrees of rear steer.
At a base price of $232,750, the Maybach S680 arrives well below the price points of its closest competitors, which makes it feel like a bargain of sorts in this segment.
We're suckers for some quality pillows, and the Maybach's do not disappoint.
The front half of the interior doesn't change too much from a standard S-class, which is fine by us.
