Some off-road trucks are more for show than for work, but the Colorado ZR2 does both with aplomb, thanks to some serious hardware that lurks underneath the fresh sheetmetal.
The ZR2 relies on the high-output variant of the turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four that's found across the Colorado lineup.
In its hi-po form, the four-pot makes 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.
That power gets sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels.
The high-output four allows the ZR2 to tow up to 6000 pounds, 1000 pounds more than its predecessor.
The Colorado ZR2 isn't any quicker than before, reaching 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.
Fuel economy is a little worse than before, with the EPA rating the ZR2 at 16 mpg combined.
The ZR2 sports Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers and a 3.0-inch lift kit, dramatically boosting its off-road prowess compared with other Colorado variants.
It's not exactly a cheap truck; our tester rang in at $53,280.
Nevertheless, if you want a mid-size pickup that is comfortable on the road but remains eminently capable in other situations, it's tough to top the ZR2.
