Nissan gave the Altima sedan a mild update for 2023, with revised styling and a larger touchscreen that is standard on the upper-tier SL and SR VC-Turbo models. But the updates aren't substantial enough to make the Altima a class leader.
Nissan's refresh for the Altima in 2023 did not include any mechanical changes, so the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable transmission carries over.
The inline-four produces 182 horsepower, and our all-wheel-drive test car took 7.6 seconds to reach 60 mph (front-wheel-drive 2.5's make 188 horses).
The Altima is even further behind the competition in passing maneuvers, its 5.5-second 50-to-70-mph time substantially slower than the times from Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai's mid-size sedans.
The brakes are strong, stopping the Altima from 70 mph in 164 feet, but like the steering wheel, the brake pedal is not particularly communicative.
The lack of steering feel made the Altima less fun to drive on twisty roads, despite outperforming its rivals on the skidpad at 0.89 g.
We saw 35 mpg on our 75-mph highway test and 24 mpg over the course of our time with the Altima.
The new 12.3-inch screen definitely makes the cabin look more modern, but the poor quality of the backup camera detracts from the modern feel.
The Altima rides well for its class, smoothly shrugging off potholes without a fuss.
The cabin is comfortable and luckily still features buttons for the essential audio and climate controls.
Our test car, an SL AWD, rang in at $37,030, a pricey proposition in the mid-size-sedan class.
