BMW, evidently tired of Toyota getting all the love for offering a manual-transmission Supra, brings a six-speed manual to the Z4 for 2025. The transmission isn't a stand-alone option but part of a package intended to transform the Z4 into more of a driver's car
From the outside, the manual-transmission Z4 doesn't look much different.
Keen observers will note the staggered wheel diameters, with 19-inch wheels up front and 20-inchers on the rear.
Retuned steering and dampers are intended to give this Z4 an edgier feel.
Far from a no-cost option, the Z4's manual transmission is part of the Edition Handschalter package, which costs $3500.
The manual is available only on the M40i trim, with the 382-hp inline-six.
The automatic Z4 will outrun the six-speed in a drag race, hitting 60 mph in 3.5 seconds versus 3.9 seconds, but that's not really the point.
The transmission is the same as the Supra's, but with different tuning of the bushings and linkages to arrive at a BMW-specific shift feel.
The transmission can rev-match, but the feature can be disabled for adept heel-and-toers.
The manual Z4 grips just as well as its automatic sibling, posting a 1.01-g result on our skidpad, which is virtually the same as the auto's 1.0-g stick.
