We don't fault you for thinking that the Honda Accord and Toyota Prius are two very, very different hybrids. But if you look a little closer, you'll see just how similar these two cars are. There's a lot to like about both hybrids, but is fuel economy alone enough to put one car atop the other?
The 2023 Toyota Prius and 2023 Honda Accord hybrid are alike in a surprising number of ways.
The 2023 Accord hybrid makes 204 horsepower from its electrified 2.0-liter inline-four.
Power is stored in a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion battery.
Instead of a traditional transmission, the Accord has three direct-drive ratios, coupling the engine to the front axle at highway speeds for better fuel economy.
The Accord's Michelin all-season tires helped the sedan produce 0.90 g of stick on our skidpad.
The Accord is also quicker than the Prius, reaching 60 mph in a sprightly 6.5 seconds.
The Accord mustered 39 mpg on our 200-mile, 75-mph highway test, well behind the Prius's 49-mpg result.
Like the Accord, the Prius also features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood.
But instead of direct-drive ratios, the Prius routes its motive force through a planetary gearset.
