There are obvious full-strength sports sedans, cars like the BMW 3-Series, that are defined by rear-wheel drive and a prestigious badge. And then there are the less committed—but also less expensive—cars, ones that proffer some degree of speed and driving enjoyment without fully demolishing your bank account. We rounded up six of the latter cohort for a shootout to find out which sub-$25,000 sporty four-door we'd most like to park in our own garages.

The Audi 80 looked like it was riding on four space-saver spares.
The Audi 80 is available with a manual, but we could only get one with the four-speed automatic.
The Infiniti G20 is great in a lot of ways, until you compare it to a Maxima.
The G20's shifter is one of the best in the group, light and precise.
The Legacy Sport Sedan is like an all-wheel-drive Saab: weird, turbocharged, and 160 horsepower.
The Subaru was fine in the macro sense, but let down by sloppy details, like the rubbery shifter.
The Vigor LS is like a nicer Accord, which is saying something.
The Vigor LS interior looks expensive. And it is.
The Mitsubishi Galant VR4: Of course we'll love a hot rod rally car.
The Galant's interior looks dated. Its performance is anything but.
The Nissan Maxima SE is due to be replaced but sill won this test.
