The Mercedes-AMG C43 is a strange one. This lovely, small luxury sedan hides a nefarious secret under its skin, one that could turn even the chillest commuter into a turbocharged creative-swear-word generator.
The C43 went away for a little bit, but now that it's back, we're left wondering if it should have spent another year expanding its horizons.
The new C43 ditches the old one's six-cylinder in favor of a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 402 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
That all sounds well and good, and it is—60 mph arrives in a brief 3.9 seconds.
An electric motor hides within the turbocharger's guts, allowing it to spool up and build boost without relying on exhaust pressure alone.
However, the four-pot isn't the powertrain's problem; everything else is.
The C43's nine-speed automatic kicks you in the back like that chiropractor you found on Craigslist.
Further vexing is the stop-start system, which cuts power at about 5 mph and then takes entirely too long to restart the whole shebang.
The result is a car that never truly feels comfortable in daily-driving scenarios, which is how we reckon most will spend their days.
This unexpected mechanical bull will run you $61,050 before the options send things into "just buy a Blackwing" territory.
