Witnessing two subcompact SUVs go head to head is about as close as you'll ever get to watching small children fight—legally, at least. These tiny utes are both extremely affordable, yet the ways these two vehicles approach the idea of building a small SUV are very, very different. Which will come out on top?
The Jeep Compass and Chevy Trax are two very different ways to approach the idea of creating a subcompact SUV.
The Chevy Trax has grown in nearly every dimension, but its engine has been downsized to a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder.
The Trax's three-banger makes a diminutive 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the front wheels (all-wheel drive is not available) through a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Compass, on the other hand, takes advantage of a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four making 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque.
On the Compass, all-wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic.
The Compass was the clear champ in our acceleration tests, recording a 7.5-second sprint from zero to 60 mph, besting the Trax's 8.8-second attempt.
For all the flak that three-cylinder engines can catch, the three-pot in the Trax proved impressively quiet, registering 37 decibels at idle against the Compass's 43-dBA result.
The Compass is quite the heavy thing. At 3717 pounds, the Jeep is 648 pounds heavier than the Trax.
That may help explain the FWD Trax's superior skidpad rating of 0.84 g, 0.03 g stickier than the Compass.
